The XXXG-01W Wing Gundam is the title Mobile Suit of the beloved Mobile Suit Gundam Wing animated series! The XXXG-01W Wing Gundam is one of the five G-Team Gundams constructed for use during Operation Meteor. Of these suits, the XXXG-01W Wing Gundam shares the most in common with the original XXXG-0W00 Wing Gundam Zero design, including the transformation into a Bird configuration. The XXXG-01W Wing Gundam excels in maneuverability thanks to the pair of wings fixed to the Mobile Suit’s backpack. Both wings split into two sub-wings to help adjust the Mobile Suit’s speed. This equipment allowed the XXXG-01W Wing Gundam to fly around the in-atmosphere while in Mobile Suit Mode. This HGAC XXXG-01W Wing Gundam builds into the original anime depiction of the Wing Gundam, a brilliant design from Kunio Okawara, but with updated proportions to keep up with the tastes of modern builders.

Here are the included accessories for the HGAC XXXG-01W Wing Gundam:

  • Buster Rifle
  • Shield
  • Beam Saber

Articulation –

The XXXG-01W Wing Gundam was Bandai’s first HGAC model, and they certainly did not disappoint! The XXXG-01W Wing Gundam enjoys many modern aspects, which Bandai continues to use years after this release as they slowly churn out more HGAC entries. Builders who love to find the perfect pose for their kits will be pleased to find out the XXXG-01W Wing Gundam features double-jointed limbs and swiveling thighs. The wings feature multiple points of articulation, allowing for much more dynamic flying poses. The conversion to Bird Mode is done in just five steps, thanks to some clever engineering. Both modes support the use of a 3mm-type Action Base without the need for an adapter!

Weapons and Other Notable Attributes

The XXXG-01W Wing Gundam’s primary weapon is the Buster Rifle. The Buster Rifle is a devastating three-shot Beam weapon with enough firepower to destroy multiple Mobile Suits and small ships with a single shot. The three canisters contained within the rifle are just molded detail and are not removable like their Master Grade counterparts. For close-quarters engagements, the XXXG-01W Wing Gundam stores a Beam Saber inside its Shield. Bandai included a transparent green Beam Effect to display the XXXG-01W Wing Gundam wielding its Beam Saber.

HGAC #162 XXXG-01W Wing Gundam

Tips and Tricks –

By implementing the technique of Top Coating, you can do a great deal to help preserve the longevity of your models. This process will protect the original plastic of your model kit and prepare it for any additional modeling techniques to follow.

You can drastically improve your results by making the details pop on the HGAC #162 XXXG-01W Wing Gundam with Panel Lining. The simplest solution for this is Gundam Markers or Tamiya Panel Line Fluid. If you’re up to a challenge making panel wash is always a great option too! It is always recommended to Topcoat with clear gloss beforehand, as some of the products commonly used for Panel Lining will degrade the untreated plastics over time.

Another way to keep adding detail is by applying Stickers/Marking DecalsTop Coating before the application will help decals stick to the surface much better. Using Top Coat after application will help hide the seams on traditional sticker decals as well as waterslides. This additional step will also keep them from peeling over time. Using Decals is a great way to add an even greater level of detail to your scale models.

This kit still holds up to this day. One of the first AU HGUC kits, and its kind of crazy how much you can play with it. The inner frame is still being used for the other HGAC kits, such as Wing Zero, Sandrock and I’m willing to bet: the Heavy Arms. The color correction stickers are very minimal, nothing too crazy thankfully. The can be bent and moved well despite being a transform type legs, feels much better than the modern HG Zeta type kits.

The Wings can move exactly the way you expect them too, which is an added plus here. It works just fine when in Bird mode, which for most people it just matters for you once and thats it. One thing that can be fun for kitbashers: the wings are actually on a seperate backpack with two male 3mm parts that can connect to most HG kits. So if you want your RX-78-2 revive or Strike Freedom with Wing Gundam Wings, you can do it!

A Con: the yellow gates on the chest do not stick on properly. I highly recommend using glue to keep them on if you are not gonna disassemble it.

if you’re a Gundam wing for 1/144 scale its a great AFFORDABLE pick. I can only imagine what the RGs could be like.
